THE ROBUSTNESS OF HDPE BALLISTIC TESTING
Many a comment has been passed about the extreme toughness of the HDPE Seahorse workboat with many a phrase comparing them to being ‘bullet proof’!
Never wanting to miss an opportunity to put HDPE to the test we carried out the ultimate test with surprising results.
Testing was carried out on 1000MM section of HDPE tube with no modifications, diameter 500MM and wall thickness 20MM.

HDPE offers an element of ballistic capabilities placing the HDPE vessel as a viable alternative to the small aluminium and GRP vessels used by the military.
12 Bore Shotgun – both barrels fired over 10M range.
The shot embedded approx. 3MM into surface (of a 20MM pipe wall thickness) with no structural damage.
.22 Caliber rifle from 30M – three shots fired over 30M range.
Each bullet penetrated the surface but did not go all of the way through.
The heat generated by the bullet melted the HDPE and sealed the bullet in place.
.243 Caliber rifle (100 grain bullet / muzzle velocity 3600ft per second) – two shots fired over a 50M range.
Shots fired passed through the outer pipe wall and embedded themselves in the opposing pipe wall.
The heat generated sealed the entry holes leaving the tube watertight. HDPE sealed the bullet in place.
